Helping Out College Students

From what I have found over the past couple of weeks as a member of the college planning services on campus is that most of the students feel out of place on our campus.  It isn’t that they don’t feel welcome, but for many, this is their first time away from home, and it can be a scary experience.

From the students that I have talked to, most of them are struggling with their financial commitments and are really looking for ways to save on the cost of college without having to give up their lifestyle.  For many of the students, they seem to get caught up on the free credit offers that find themselves in their mailboxes, with many of them getting caught off guard with their new-found credit cards.

Part of their problem also is due to the fact that most of them try to estimate the cost of college, but they forget to include such things as living expenses and spending money and find themselves in trouble.

That is exactly where I step in - I help them learn how to make a budget, minimize their expenses and help them to stay on track and out of debt as much as possible.  So far the response has been good, but I look forward to working with these students over the time that they are at our college and I hope that I can make a difference.
