Classification of Bladder Control Problems
There are many different reasons that people experience bladder control problems and there are four main groups of which incontinence is normally classified. The following list describes the various groups and causes for informational purposes only; check with your doctor to discuss the incontinence treatment that is best for you.
Stress Incontinence occurs primarily when pressure is applied the bladder that results in urine leakage. Exercising can also trigger stress incontinence, as well as coughing, laughing and sneezing. These symptoms normally cease as the activity stops, but if it continues for a prolonged period, it could be urge incontinence.
Urge Incontinence is usually described as the need to frequently urinate as it is also called having an overactive bladder. Many times the urge incontinence only will occur over night while sleeping and can be solved with the use of incontinence aids.
Overflow incontinence is the next type and it happens when the bladder will not empty completely due to a block of the urine flow. The blockage can be due to an obstruction or inactive bladder muscles that may have become swollen. The leakage of urine is caused by the partial opening of the internal sphincter when stretched.
The last type of urinary incontinence is functional incontinence and this type is caused by conditions that prevent the individual from urinating on their own, such as physical or mental disabilities. Such diseases as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease are primary conditions that cause this type of incontinence.
