Implications of Social Networking
I was just signing in to facebook from campus — I’m down here with my husband, who has a class on campus this semester — and it occurred to me what an amazing tool social networking sites offer.
Before facebook, I had very little contact with my old friends from high school. I had one friend — one friend — from high school who sent me cards at Christmas and on my birthday, and just in general tried to keep in touch. But that was it — and I wasn’t even very good at keeping in touch with her in return.
But since signing up for facebook, I have a whole bunch of people on my page from my graduating class. Suddenly I am able to keep in touch with people I was never able to before. It’s amazing!
As useful as social networking is for people’s social lives, I started wondering if it can be used for other things. Well, of course. It occurred to me that I’d seen marketing messages sent via facebook and Twitter, and I’d heard of group management software integrating with Twitter to help sports teams and other groups stay in touch better.
Technology may have complicated our lives in some ways, but it has also simplified them in many ways, too. How has technology helped to simplify your life?
