Tips for Ordering Online
Certain things you have to be a bit more careful about when ordering online. Clothing falls into that category, because it is so hard to know whether something will fit you right, or even whether you will like how it looks on you as opposed to the model.
Certain other things are like this too. For instance, recently I ordered an English saddle cover for my horses’s saddle, to prevent it from getting so dirty in the tack room. When I received it, I found that it didn’t fit my saddle at all. A lesser issue was that I didn’t like the fabric it was made from as much as I’d thought I would.
That’s the risk of ordering things online — pictures don’t really tell you everything you need to know. Here are a few things you should ask before ordering something online.
- Measurements. Don’t just assume something is the right size — ask for actual measurements. For instance, if you are ordering a cathedral length mantilla veil for your wedding, request the measurements rather than assuming it’s the length you want for your dress.
- Materials. You should also ask about materials. For instance, if you are ordering a crystal veil, you might want to know the weight and stiffness or softness of the fabric, and the material that the beads are made of. Likewise, if you are ordering jewelry online, you’ll need to ask what kind of metal and stones they are made of, and whether the metal is plated or solid.
- Condition. If you are buying something that is vintage or previously owned, you will also want to ask for details about the condition. Sometimes pictures don’t show everything, so ask for a description of any flaws.
- Return policy. No matter how good of a description you get, there is always the chance that it won’t be exactly what you hoped. Therefore you should make sure you ask ahead of time what their return policy is, just in case.
Ordering online doesn’t always work out exactly right, but with the right precautions it can be reasonably safe. Plus, ordering online is incredibly convenient, which makes up for some of the disadvantages of not actually seeing the merchandise first!
