Living in the Past
I’ve lived a relatively successful life so far, and I’m proud of it. My first pride and joy is my family, but second is my house because I take pride in being able to provide a nice home for my family. It was not always the same when I was a kid growing up with my parents and siblings. The times were different and my dad was not quite as lucky as I have been.
Don’t get me wrong; I loved my family and had a great life growing up, but now that I live in relative luxury, I appreciate that things weren’t always easy and ideal for my family when I was growing up. My dad was your classic HVAC guy-self-employed, honest and hardworking. He was and still is a great guy, but when you’re self-employed in such a competitive market, things can get rough when you’re trying to provide for a wife and four kids. His preference was for my mom not to work, but sometimes it was necessary, and my siblings and I had to do a lot of growing up on our own.
Through good times and bad, though, the one thing that always kept up our spirits and sense of family was our Sunday family BBQ. We only had a pretty standard charcoal grill, but my we’d all get together on Saturday night to get the meat and vegetables ready, and then on Sunday we’d have some family and friends over and cook out. No matter how tight things got, it was always a constant.
So when I finally made a name for myself at my company and started getting paid well, I decided to build a house for my family; and as important as the interior design, carpeting kitchen accessories were to make my wife happy and the playground out back for my kids, I was most excited for the outdoor kitchen with the built in grill island. The thing was going to have everything, all the outdoor kitchen supplies a man could possibly desire. I couldn’t wait to have my dad and the rest of the family over and have a BBQ just like the old days-that is, until it actually happened.
