How Golf is Changing

My husband and I were talking the other night about how much golf is changing.  It used to attract primarily white, middle- or upper-class folks, particularly businessmen.  But lately it seems like golf is beginning to attract a lot of people, such as minorities, that you once wouldn’t have really pictured as golfers.

My husband thinks a lot of it has to do with Tiger Woods.  Seeing a minority make it big as a golf professional has to be inspiring for many people who wouldn’t otherwise be interested in golf.  I agree with that.  But I also think there are some other factors at work here.

For one thing, golf has a much stronger media presence than it used to.  It’s better televised — heck, it even has its own channels — and there are whole magazines devoted to the sport.  I’m sure that has a significant influence, because it means that people are more aware of golf, AND that there are  more opportunities to develop a serious interest in it.

The other thing I think that has made a difference is the better availability of instruction.  Not only is it easier to enroll in private golf lessons and recreational classes, but there are also more golf schools offering college-level courses and degrees.

Regardless of why golf has become so popular in recent years, one thing is for certain: It is more popular, and its stars are bigger heroes, than ever before!

I am pretty new to golf and have definitely noticed how much coverage there is. I may be noticing it more now that I play but I soak it all in, trying to make my game better. Hopefully someday I’ll be able to hit par!

A lot of my friends have been getting into golf and it has made me more and more interested. I am thinking about trying it out and am looking in to instruction. I didn’t think there would be so many options! I may not do too bad the first time I play if I use some of these schools!

I’ve played golf for years recreationally. I have noticed the increased coverage and am very happy about it. It makes me want to go play even more and I have noticed improvements in my game from taking mental notes about pros. I love it!

I’m not the biggest fan of golf but have been watching it more and more. It seems to be on some channel at all hours of the day and night, and now I am thinking of trying it. I didn’t realize how many courses were around me before but there are a ton!

A friend of mine golfs all the time and has been inviting me a lot lately. I plan on going with him next weekend but have never played before. I looked up instruction and found a great place nearby really fast. I will at least be able to hit the ball when I play with my friend!

I work on a golf course and love the increased attention. Buisness is booming, which I know most buisnesses can’t say right now. If this continues my boss told me I would probably need to work more and I can definitely use the money. I love the new attention!

I love golf! I am awful at it but I have such a good time going out with my friends on a sunny day. This new attention has made it a bit harder to get a good tee time, but it’s nice to see the course being used so much.
