A Conversation on Flow Meters

A friend of mine that works for a natural gas company was telling me the other day that his company was in the process of replacing the mass air flow meters at his plant due to concerns over rising cost of gas delivery to their customers.  I proceeded to ask him more about why that replacing these devices would make any sort of difference.   He proceeded to give me a short course on the monitoring gas flow inside of a large company.

I discovered that an air flow meter helps to measure not only the flow in the pipes carrying the gas, but also the pressure of the gas.  A drop in pressure can be indicative of a gas leak.  A gas leak, no matter how small, can cost consumers money due to wasted gas.  It is similar to when you have a leak around a valve cover in a car.  This ends up costing you not only money for more oil, but if not corrected, it can cause larger problems down the road.

Highly technical and pressure sensitive devices are used to regulate flow measurement.  Without having precise measurements, companies risk losing money to waste and also can leave them open to disaster when leaks go untreated.
